I don't think it's anything to do with the type of backlinks you get but more on the fact that they don't want their algorithm figured out. If I am not mistaken, Google index backlinks very quickly but refuse to reveal them due to reason mentioned. To find out what backlinks have for you, try using Googles Webmasters Tools where they will reveal just about everything for your site.

Google can 'Sandboxed' any site which is using illegal methods for getting backlinks. so be careful.
