Just wondering if anyone can point in the direction of any threads about setting up a link / blog network. I am really looking for advice about where to get hold of old domains and what to do to stay under the Google Radar.

Those are two different questions. So I am going to answer the one that you said you are 'really looking for advice about'. :)
goto Namescatch.com .. pick out the domains that have the keywords and some links with them. Don't worry so much about the age. Age doesn't matter as much as links. It isn't about the domain age anyways, it's about the link age that really matters.
As you can see.. you can pickup some established domains for basically double the cost of registering new. Not bad. After you get it, make sure you analyse where all the links are coming from and to. Do a 301 for each page that is gone and point it do your TLD.
Build your site, and CONTINUE TO BUILD LINKS! I say that in bold, because if you just sit on that domain and do nothing with it, you are going to throw off the link velocity after google respiders and figures out its got a new owner. Only way you are going to retain all that you paid for is to continue building links.
Good luck.

If you have money to blow, you should try LinxBoss.
Hmm, I'll try the above users idea soon.
But a better step by step will be appreicaited :D
You could start by building pages on Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. There are tons of Web 2.0 sites that let you create profile pages. Also submit articles with your backlink to various article directories.
I did the home study course and its not bad but they take a lot of chances on getting caught. It's worth the $2295 but be way more paranoid about being caught than they are...
