What made Twitter a success wasn't actually the service at all. While it is cool, the real power comes from the API.

From day one Twitter was open and easy to deal with. It's API is also really cool in so far as how powerful and easy it is.

The reality is Twitter apps are pretty easy to make and all you need is the link above.

Use cUrl and the API.
Sockets and API.
.NET and API

If you need something done on Twitter just keep that in mind. If you can't code it yourself it will only run you 10-20 on scriptlance to get it done.

A friend of mine had a play with this, managed to do some pretty impressive stuff. Made a website that basically allowed you to use and update facebook, twitter, myspace and loads more, all from one website.
